Washington, D. C.
Dear Sir:In reply to your letter of May 9, 1941, referring to application for commission in the U S. Naval Reserve submitted by Mr. Lafayette R. Hubbard, the following information
is submitted.Mr. Hubbard is the son of Lt. Commander H. R. Hubbard, (SC) USN, now on duty at the Navy Yard, Mare Island, California. I have personally known Mr. Hubbard for the past nineteen years. His mental and moral qualifications are in my opinion excellent. I consider his education adequate, having to my knowledge attended private schools as well as the George Washington University. For the past five or six years, he has been engaged in writing stories for magazines under the pen name of L. Ron Hubbard. He has a masters license in sailing vessels as well as motor vessels, and has done considerable exploring in British Columbia and Alaskan waters, and has piloted most of the harbors of the Caribbean.
I understand he has a working knowledge of navigation which may be valuable in his duties in the Naval Reserve. His family background is excellent. His reputation for
integrity, loyalty, and patriotism is unquestionable.I do not hesitate to recommend him as being good officer material, and will lend credit to the Reserve if given a commission.
Respectfully,
W. E. McCain
Commander (SC) USN
Supply Officer
